Lavinia Oloaga - Art Competitions
Lavinia Oloaga entered her artwork Honey Bird in several art competitions. She won first place in her age category 11-12 years Wild At Art Competition. Her mother received an email in April from the team at Spencil who said they absolutely adored Lavinia's artwork design so much, they requested permission for her design to feature in a special Art Prize book cover collection for Spencil 2023 for kids all around Australia to use and love. Honey Bird design has just been released on the Spencil website. Lavinia is credited on the back of each book cover as the artist, as well as a special blurb on the product description on the Spencil website. https://spencil.com.au/product/a4-book-cover-honey-bird/
Congratulations, Lavinia! Please read her description below of this beautiful artwork.
"I named my artwork Warrul Thigaraa meaning Honey Bird in Kamilaroi language.
Caring for country, it’s plants, animals and their habitat is connected to and part of my Aboriginal culture. It’s important to share knowledge about animals and plants that are endangered to inspire and educate people to make a difference.
My artwork represents how important Regent Honey Eaters are to our environment. I hope my artwork will inspire people to plant more nectar trees encouraging more nesting and increase the Regent Honey Eater species and save their habitat. I love to use patterns and symbols, so I was drawn to the distinctive colours and patterns of the Regent Honey Eaters. Yellow means happy to me. I have used gold, yellow and black to highlight the features of the Regent Honey Eater and I was inspired by the unique artwork tree of life by artist Klimt as he uses lots of yellow and patterns in his artwork.
I used acrylic paint on canvas. My artwork has a flowing nectar tree with lots of wattle to nourish and sustain the Regent Honey Eaters habitat and stop them from becoming extinct."
Owen Haider - Travelling overseas with his love of soccer
In September, one of our Year 6 students, Owen Haider, was asked to travel to Europe to participate in a series of soccer camps. He had been headhunted by soccer pros looking for new talent. Owen works very hard throughout the week with school plus his commitments to weekly soccer training plus games. This effort and passion has paid off as he enjoyed playing alongside internationally renowned clubs like Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Congratulations Owen, we are so pleased that your dreams are coming to fruition!
