Secondary School Update

Read more for an update from PDHPE and Mathematics, as well as from Year 10 Business Week and our Year 12 Prefect Excursion.

PDHPE Update - Term 4

Mr Bradley Whale

This term saw the arrival of the new College cricket nets, conveniently coinciding with the beginning of two cricket tournaments for our Under 15’s Cricket Squad.

The first game for the team was Round 1 of the Wiburd Shield Competition against Penrith Anglican College. The boys took to this game fiercely and with a great deal of passion, gaining their first win by 155 runs. The next two games were a 20/20 format for the CSSA Cricket Competition, pitting ACC against Toongabbie Christian College and then Norwest Christian College in back to back games. Big hitting and relentless pressure in the field brought about another two consecutive wins and moving the team into the Semi Finals.

The second round of the Wiburd Shield presented a formidable challenge in Hills Grammar. Despite ACC’s efforts and late surge for victory, the opposing team capitalised on their fielding opportunities, thwarting any further progress within this competition. In the CSSA Semi-Final, a team road trip injected some much needed energy into the squad, competing against Northern Beaches Christian School and host team Carinya Christian School in Scone. Unfortunately ACC’s cricket journey concluded here for the year, facing defeat in both matches against more disciplined sides, predominantly comprised of taller and stronger Year 9 students.

Congratulations to all Year 7, 8 and 9 squad members who participated within numerous training sessions and games. A big thank you to Mrs Tranter and Mr Mthembu for their organisation and administrative support, Mr Johnston for transport logistics, Mr Finau for his bus driving and support in Scone, Mrs Mewjork for her proficient scoring at our local games, and Mr Kwok and Mr Aslam for their coaching, administration assistance and coordination of training sessions.

Additionally, a sincere note of appreciation and gratitude to Mr Tim Shields and ACC Singleton for their hospitality and generosity in hosting the team overnight for their games in Scone.

Year 12 Prefect Excursion to Norwest Christian College

Mrs Sarah Aydin

Year 12 Prefects of Australian Christian College were invited to Norwest Christian College for an afternoon of connection and collaboration. The event proved to be an enriching experience that left a lasting impression on our Year 12 prefects.

From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Mr. Daryl Hinton, the Head of Secondary, and the Norwest Prefects, who were incredibly friendly and inclusive individuals. The exchange of insights into leadership was invaluable, offering a glimpse into how we could enhance our efforts to make a positive impact at our own school.

The day kicked off with introductions and a Bible talk by Pastor Marcus Reid from Riverstone Baptist Church, emphasising the importance of modelling Jesus in leadership and serving our school community with dedication. Following this, we engaged in small discussion groups where we shared our experiences, goals, and ideas for the future. This proved to be a great bonding experience as we discovered common ground and aspirations with our counterparts at Norwest Christian College. The day concluded with Pastor Reid's inspirational message distilled into the acronym PIES: Pray, Inspire, Engage, and Serve, encapsulating the essence of effective leadership.

It was a delightful time of connection, learning, and inspiration that undoubtedly influenced our leadership journey at our own school.

Year 8 Mathematics

Mrs Esther Ganta

Mrs. Ganta's Year 8 Maths class students have been exploring the Project-based learning (PBL) approach in exploring the concept of Linear Relationships. PBL is a teaching methodology that encourages students to learn and apply knowledge and skills through the completion of projects.

Hands-on projects can be a fantastic way to explore mathematical concepts in the classroom, making the subject more engaging and practical for students.

As a part of their learning process, students had to present their projects to other classes. The encouragement provided to explain their mathematical reasoning and decision-making process boosted their confidence to see the real-life applications of Maths. Students demonstrated their ideas using equations, graphs, and other mathematical tools to represent and analyze the situation.

Year 10 - Australian Business Week

Mr Bradley Adams

This week our Year 10 students had a fantastic time exercising their creativity and skills, through their participation in Australian Business Week (ABW).

Students were placed in a team of 8 or 9 students and from there became a ‘Business Management’ team. Over the four days of ABW the students assumed different roles, including CEO, Finance, Marketing and Operations and were assigned a number of projects. The projects included participating in reading complex financial documents and inputting financial, operational and marketing decisions via a business simulation model. The group competed against each over 8 decision periods responding to ups and downs in their financial documents. Teams also were responsible for creating a sporting product that they then marketed through a video commercial and a trade display. At the end of the week the teams produced an oral presentation and a written company report.

Students were evaluated on each of these areas and a grand champion was announced at the end of the week. Congratulations to 'Nano Swing' for winning our competition!

Students also were able to hear from a number of different professionals reflecting on various aspects of business. We are incredibly grateful to Kristy Brisbane (CEO of Allsorts Sorted), Hugh Humphreys (Director of Hustle Media) and Erin Pollard (Marketing Specialist at Samaritan's Purse) and for the time they were able to give to the students in sharing their experiences in business.

Students immersed themselves in the experience and learnt valuable skills in working in teams, and some basic skills in running a business.
