Secondary Learning Spotlight

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

Read more to hear about Year 9 Geography and their time spent assisting our Primary classes, as well as our Year 9 and 10 Sports and Exercise Science class and the activities our Distance Education students enjoyed at Blue Gum Lodge Camp.

Year 9 Geography with Mr Thomson

Our Year 9 Geography students have been studying a unit on wellbeing, with a specific focus on ‘improving wellbeing by helping others’. To help put their learning into practice, this week our Year 9 students visited a number of Primary classes to help their younger peers in their learning. Our Year 9s assisted with a range of activities including mathematics, report writing skills and some visual arts activities.

One student commented, “It’s a good opportunity to get to know the Primary students better, we don’t usually get to spend a lot of time with them. The kids were really fun to play with and I had a great time helping them”

Another said, “I really wanted to be chosen to help my brother’s class and I did! I got to help him in Maths which is exactly what I was hoping for. Watching the little kids waving at us and greeting us made us feel so special. The students were so cooperative - they raised their hands respectfully, wanted to learn and spoke to me in a fun manner. I would definitely do this activity again. I wouldn’t mind doing it every week!” Thank you to our HSIE team and Primary teachers for facilitating this opportunity for our students.

Year 9 and 10 Sports and Exercise Science with Mr Whale

The first few weeks of Term 4 have been busy for our Year 9 and 10 Sports and Exercise Science elective students. They have begun their Sports Performance unit, which builds on everything they have learned so far this year so they can begin to effectively analyse and improve their performance in sports-related skills.

To further explore this, students are undertaking a project-based assessment task in which they are required to analyse a specific athletic skill, identify the major bones, muscles and joint actions involved, and provide coaching tips for improving future performance.

Students have enjoyed using slow-motion filming, alongside analysis applications, to further explore the biomechanics of their chosen skills. In addition, they are combining their coaching skills previously explored in Term 1 to provide accurate feedback, identify positive coaching points and areas for further improvement and skill development.

Central to this task and in harmony with the vision of Australian Christian College, the class has discussed the value of striving to succeed in all that God has created them to be and the importance of helping others become their best in all things. We have been spurred on by Colossians 3:23 - “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters”.

Distance Education Blue Gum Lodge Camp with Janet Dawson

In Term 3, Distance Education students from Secondary School had the opportunity to attend a camp in the Blue Mountains.

We started off the week with an 'easy' bush walk.

IT WAS NOT EASY!!!

We were encouraged to get to know some of the campers while we were out walking. Upon my return from the walk, I was asked who I had met. I responded that I thought I was going to 'meet Jesus' as the walk was soooo steep!

The camp provided opportunities for students and staff to participate in adventure activities, team building tasks and study sessions. Students enjoyed archery, a camp fire with roasted (or burnt) marshmallows, volleyball, tennis and orienteering.

Each night, the Christian staff from the campsite would run action packed games as well as share their testimonies or a devotion from the Bible. It was a wonderful time to hear the truth of Jesus, surrounded by old and new friends alike.

Overall, it was a great time for our DE students. The food was delicious, the beds were comfy and the bushland setting was beautiful! Lasting memories are made at camp and it was a great opportunity to get to know the staff and students that we interact with every day online, but rarely get to meet with in person.
