Read more to hear about the Year 11 Biology excursion to Mount Tomah Botanical Gardens, and the Year 8 and 9 Mathematics Inquisitive Minds workshop.

Year 11 Biology

Year 11 Biology had a fantastic time at the Biological Diversity Excursion yesterday. This was held at Mount Tomah Botanical Gardens, and is a collaboration with Taronga Zoo, the Gardens and the Australian Museum. It covers a chunk of Module 3 (biological diversity) and Module 4 (ecosystem dynamics) for the Year 11 Biology course, and is really hands-on and interactive.

Students were able to handle fossils, skeletons and other biological specimens that were supplied by the Museum and the Botanical Gardens. Taronga Zoo also brought a number of live animals to assist students in their studies on adaptations and behaviours. Students had a great time interacting with snakes, possums, frogs and shingleback lizards. We are so proud of our students for the way they conducted themselves and thankful for a beautiful day to enjoy this excursion!

Year 8 and 9 Mathematics

Yesterday, a group of our year 8 and 9 mathematics students had the opportunity to attend an Inquisitive Minds workshop, in collaboration with students from other schools. Inquisitive Minds is a Sydney-based educational business that runs a range of exciting workshops in schools, where students are taught strategic problem-solving techniques and are given the opportunity to work on a series of engaging, original, hands-on maths problems.

Our students attended the ‘Problems, Patterns, Pictures and Puzzles’ workshop, aimed at talented mathematicians in their age range. Students worked in pairs in an interactive lesson on strategic problem solving. They then worked alongside like-minded individuals from other schools on a selection of original hands-on problems in a fast-paced and challenging race. The students had a great day and are looking forward to many more exciting opportunities like this!
