Read more to find out about the projects and excursions that have been happening in Year 8 Mathematics, Year 7 Science and Year 12 English this week.
Year 8 Mathematics
This week, year 8 has been focusing on the Probability unit in Mathematics. Students were engaged in some hands-on activities in this lesson to help further explore mathematical concepts.
In order to examine the concept of Sample Space, students formed a list of all of the possible theoretical probabilities, and then tested experimental outcomes for various types of chance experiments. Some of these experiments included playing cards, rolling dice, and flipping coins. Students also learned to refine their strategies to increase their chances to win in each game. It was great to see students immerse themselves in Mathematics through this activity. We hope to see more and more students being inspired and able to see how Mathematics can help them develop systematic and logical thinking skills throughout their lives.
Year 7 Science
Year 7 Science have been learning about separating methods. In lab groups, they were challenged to devise their own method to separate a mixture of salt, sand, paper clips and rice. The groups worked collaboratively to find a solution to the problem of separating the items (with minimal input from their teacher - except safety!) They did a great job of designing their own experiments and trying to solve the problems that they encountered with their methods. They learned about the difficulties of conserving all of the mass when trying to separate mixtures and will be relating this to recycling and mining later in the year.
Year 12 English - Parklea Markets Excursion
Last Friday, our daring Year 12 English Studies students went to Parklea Markets to learn more about how to run and set up a business at Parklea Markets. The excursion is a culmination of everything they have been learning in English throughout Term Two.
The unit ‘In the Marketplace - English and the world of business’ explores various texts and concepts about business and how the skills of reading, comprehending, communicating and writing are utilized in the world of business.
Our Year 12’s interviewed Mr Edgard Elters, the General Manager of Parklea Markets. Not only did they learn about the history and uniqueness of the place, but they also learned the practicalities of starting and running a business. Our students had the opportunity to interview Mr Edgard and ask questions, such as:
What’s the most important thing to keep in mind when managing a business?
What are some of the lessons you have learnt over time as a manager?
What do you like about being a manager?
What are some of the challenges of the people wanting to start a business at Parklea Markets?
How is Parklea Markets able to help small startup businesses?
Mr Edgard said that this was the first time Parklea Markets hosted a school for an excursion. He was so impressed with our students that he is keen to host our school again next year. He even offered our students an opportunity to work there if they were interested in applying for a position.
After the interview, students had the opportunity to shop and sample a variety of the delicious foods available.
Well done, Year 12, for representing our school well!
