Secondary Learning Spotlight

Read more to hear about our upcoming BBQ Fundraiser event, as well as an update from the Stand Tall conference, Year 10's Wheelchair Basketball Incursion, our Elective Music and Visual Arts classes, and an overview of our Secondary Encounter Night.

Aduk Dau Fundraiser

Next Thursday 29th June, our College will be hosting a BBQ Fundraiser to raise money for ‘The Lost Children of Jonglei Scholarship’, which was started by Aduk Dau, who herself experienced life in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya.

‘The Lost Children of Jonglei Scholarship’ is an Anglican Aid project which provides the chance for children living in Kakuma Refugee Camp to receive a secondary school education. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards this project.

On the day, students can purchase a sausage sandwich and drink for $5, or a sausage sandwich only for $3. Thank you for supporting this project!

Stand Tall Event

It was a delight and privilege to take a number of our Secondary students to the 'Stand Tall' event last week.

‘Stand Tall’ is an inspirational TED X type of conference where students hear from keynote speakers from various careers and experiences in life. These talks arm students with the skills of resilience, the strength to stand up to bullying, the keys to motivation, the power of perspective and the benefits of making good and wise decisions. These speakers come together to build hope for the future in the next generation to support and champion their overall health and wellbeing.

Wheelchair Basketball

In an engaging event during Week 7, the students of Year 10 were presented with a unique opportunity to delve into road safety, disability awareness, and physical activity as part of their Paralympics unit in PDHPE. Brendan, an inspiring athlete from Wheelchair Sport NSW/ACT, shared his remarkable journey and experiences as an athlete in athletics, swimming, basketball, table tennis, and Wheelchair Tennis.

The event also included an exciting session where students got hands-on experience with Wheelchair Basketball, immersing themselves in the challenges and opportunities of wheelchair sports. Brendan's powerful message about disability awareness and the benefits of Wheelchair Sport resonated with the students, broadening their understanding and providing valuable insights into the importance of road safety and risk management. The event served as a reminder for all to cherish their abilities and make responsible choices for a safer future.

Update from our Elective Music Classes

Year 9 Elective Music has seen some incredible talent emerging. It’s our biggest Elective Music class to date at ACC and the students have enjoyed preparing for our Jazz Cafe evening next week. The event is for families of the students only as we are keeping their first public performance relatively small, however you’ll be able to see many of the performances at our upcoming MAD night event, on Tuesday 1st of August.

Year 10 Music have been exploring composition and music production techniques as well as developing a repertoire from their Australian Music topic. Year 11 has been discovering possibilities when experimenting with unusual sounds and tone colours, integrating these into wonderful performances and compositions. These students are so creative!

Our Year 12’s have already displayed immense skill and professionalism at a Higher School Certificate performance evening during Term 1 and are preparing the rest of their repertoire for their Higher School Certificate performances, coming up late Term 3. Like our Yr 9 elective music students, you’ll be able to see our Year 10, 11 and 12 performers at MAD night next term.

Our Year 9/10 Distance Education elective submitted their performance assessment for Term 1 and 2, with well prepared and pleasing results. Special mention goes to Kye Dennis for his show stopping vocal rendition of “Evermore” from the musical Beauty and the Beast and Sophia Li for her violin concerto that would be worthy of any overseas concert hall.

Year 9 Visual Arts

Year 9 Visual Arts students have been engaged in a new Unit Cultural Threads this Term. Drawing inspiration from woven and textile traditions, students have embarked on the creative process of unpacking their own personal cultural narratives of identity and belonging and histories to create a series of culture strong portraits and woven works.

Meet the artist: Maya Harding (featured picture - artwork in progress)

My mixed media work investigates the ways that culture, memory and a sense of belonging shapes my experiences and my impressions of the world. My artwork is a realistic portrait of myself surrounded by a field of sunflowers. My work draws connections between my cultural heritage being Australian and Scottish and the notions of place. The plaid Scottish fabric is threaded into a field of sunflowers evocative of a cherished landscape.

Secondary Encounter Night

This Wednesday, 350 of our senior students gathered for a night of prayer and worship at our first Secondary School Encounter Night for 2023.

The pre-service event was packed with great things: a handball championship, sausage sizzle, live music and time to simply enjoy each other's company.

We are so thankful for our partnership with local youth ministries as well as Alphacrucis College in making the event a success. Hillsong Youth Band graciously came along and led our students in a powerful time of worship during the night. The students were encouraged with stories of the freedom Jesus brings into our lives when we follow him and they were encouraged to put their trust in the God of the Bible.

The sense of God's presence during the night was tangible and led 51 students to dedicate their lives to following Jesus - with 15 being first time decisions. Praise God! We couldn't have done it without our incredible staff team lending their strength on the night. We're celebrating all that God did and continues to do as a result!
