Year 10 English with Mrs Cavens and Miss Gough
This term, Year 10 English students have been engaging in a unit on Science-Fiction. They have learned about the different conventions of the Science-Fiction genre and have had opportunities to write creatively within this genre.
Students have also enjoyed engaging with various Science-Fiction texts, from short films and stories to feature-length films, like ‘Avatar.’ Year 10 have been tasked with creating their own dystopian worlds, where they were asked to imagine that they were one of 1000 survivors left on Earth after World War III. Students considered how their new dystopian world would operate and how they would ensure the survival of humanity.
In this lesson, students presented their different, created ‘worlds’ to their classmates. It was wonderful to see the creativity of our students on display. Some of the key features of these created worlds included advanced transport, improved healthcare and alternative education.
Two of our Year 10 students, Charlotte B and Tamarin S, have reflected on their experience working on this project:
"We found that this task proved to be challenging and more detailed than initially expected. However, the immense creative freedom was engaging and allowed us to freely interpret the best solution for society in such circumstances and establish a new way of life. Overall this task has taught us more about our world in its current form, and the possibilities we could explore in response to a theoretical third world war."

Thank you to Mrs Cavens for organising this exciting learning opportunity for our Year 10 English students.

What life would look like in their new dystopian world:
Year 12 Visual Arts Excursion - Sculpture by the Sea
Yr 12 Visual Arts students had the opportunity to participate in an excursion to Bondi to view Sculpture by the Sea last Friday. This excursion was part of their case study on sculpture and site-specific artworks. The students enjoyed a focus tour to learn more about the works, and then engaged in discussions with members of the public to determine which works resonated most with viewers. It was a gorgeous day and we can’t wait to see how the students use this experience and the skills they have learned in their Major Works next year!
Junior Boys Cricket Gala Day
Congratulations to the CSSA U15 Boys Cricket team for putting up a good fight and representing the College with integrity last week. The boys came up against some tough competition and despite not walking away as the victors, they can hold their heads high after a huge day!
Year 12 Ancient History Cooking Class
As part of their study of the economy in Pompeii and Herculaneum, Year 12 have been discussing items of trade, in particular an item called ‘garum’ - a fish sauce widely used for flavouring cuisine, but also considered to have medicinal properties. According to Pliny the Elder, “no other liquid…has come to be more highly valued.”
For a fun, practical consolidation of their learning, Miss Flood made garum from scratch and arranged a cooking lesson so the students could try an ancient Roman dish consisting of soft boiled eggs, garum and pine nut sauce. Thank you to our brave students who tried the dish and to Miss Flood for planning such a fun experience for our Senior students!
Remembrance Day
Every class and staff member gathered at the 11th hour today to honour members of the armed forces who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. We recognise that this is a sad day for your family if you have a relative who was lost or injured in war. We also recognise this is also a day for us to give thanks for their sacrifice and for the grace of God that we are free from war right now in Australia.
Why is this day special to Australians?
In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute silence at 11.00am on 11 November each year, to remember all of the men and women of the Australian Defence Force who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Thank you to Mr McGowan, Miss Flood and our Secondary students - Rhys Sultana, Jaime Baker, Sam Boyle and Joshua George for informing our school community this morning about the significance of Remembrance Day. We invite you to watch their video below.
We will remember them. Lest we forget.
