Secondary Learning Spotlight

Read more to see an update from our Tech, English, Drama, PDHPE/Sports & Exercise Science and Art classes across the Secondary school.

Year 7 Tech

Last week, two Year 7 classes reached the culmination of their efforts in designing and building their very own CO2 Dragster prototype. The cars are made from Balsa wood and are propelled by the same CO2 gas canisters found in appliances like at-home soda makers.

The climax involved 'Race Day' on Tuesday of Week 5 in the MPC. Throughout last term, students learnt about the importance of having a design brief, how to conduct thumbnail sketches and the Scientific principles behind the working product. These included atmospheric pressure, fluid friction and Newton's Third Law of Motion.

The video below shows Mr Gill's 'pride and joy' car being outpaced by a car made by year 7T's Dewan Jacobs. Year 7 will soon move on to programming an accurate timing system so they can race their cars again and calculate their speed. Some of these cars have been clocked at a massive 200 KM/H in the past!

Year 9 English & Drama Excursion

Last Thursday, the year 10 English class and year 9 Drama class had the exciting opportunity to view a production of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ at Riverside Theatre. This excursion will assist year 10 in their critical study of the tragedy, and assist year 9 with their understanding of theatre and the mechanisms of performance.

Photos are shared below with the permission of Riverside Theatre.

Year 10 PDHPE and Year 9 & 10 Sports and Exercise Science

Year 10 PDHPE and Year 9 & 10 Sports and Exercise Science classes got competitive playing wheelchair basketball this week as part of their Paralympics unit. Through this activity, students practice teamwork and communication; learn to adapt and improvise their movements and address complex challenges. The incursion was overseen by Rick from Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT who spoke passionately to the students about his own lifelong love of sport, but also the importance of building and maintaining respectful relationships, and minimising risk-taking activity.

Senior Art

Our year 9/10, 11 and 12 art classes are in the process of developing bodies of work, which will be displayed at our Music, Art and Drama (MAD) Night coming up in term 3. The focus of this process is for the students to develop their own individual artistic practice. To do this, they research artists they are inspired by and choose materials and techniques to explore.

The students have chosen many different mediums, including ceramics, oil painting, charcoal, coloured pencil, acrylic, gouache, dry pastels, graphite and Copic markers. We encourage you to view the works in progress for each grade below and come along to MAD Night in Term 3 to see the final products which will include the HSC Major Works underdevelopment!
