As part of their new unit, 'The Craft of Writing,' Year 12 Advanced English students had the chance to compose their own pieces of imaginative, persuasive or discursive writing and engaged in Writer's Workshop sessions together.
Most students chose to write imaginative pieces, but some students also wrote topical persuasive pieces. Some topics covered were whether animated films are appropriate for both children and adults, and whether there are flaws in the current statewide education and examination system.
Students were given their classmate's written work, as well as a marking criteria, and were to annotate and comment on one another's pieces. The class enjoyed reading what each other had written and being able to comment on what worked well and what needed additional work.
This has proven to be a valuable exercise for the students, to be exposed to such a variety of written responses and to have the chance to engage in that process of giving constructive feedback, as well as to encourage their peers regarding their work.
It inspired their creativity and has enabled students to refine their own creative pieces, in preparation for their upcoming assessment task, as well as their Higher School Certificate Examination.
