Primary School Update

Updated: Feb 15, 2024

Read more for a series of updates from Mrs Melanie Woods, our Head of Primary.

Start of the Year

We are still enjoying ‘the feeling’ you have when you see an old friend after some time. Our staff, families and students continue to celebrate catching up after our summer holidays when arriving at school, finding each other in the playground or catching up with another family at dismissal or while waiting at the coffee van.

It is great to see all the interaction and how the children are settling into their new routines, classes, play areas and cohorts. Please contact your classroom teacher if you have any questions or information you think we may need to know. There is a lovely peace on campus and I know the community are enjoying the effect of what that brings!

Health Updates

A lot can change from year to year and over the break. Your child may have needed to see a health professional either physically, socially or emotionally. In order for us to make sure your child receives the best start, can you please update me and your child’s classroom teacher of any new change to your child or family circumstances so we can support them and provide an environment for them to thrive in.

If you need to reach out, my email address is melaniewoods@acc.edu.au - I look forward to hearing from you.

Primary Leadership Team

Let me introduce you to our Primary Leadership Team!

Mr Shawn Parsonage and myself have the honour of looking after the staff, families and students within our Primary community. Please feel free to ask questions or provide us with any relevant information so we can provide support and clarity and ensure your College experience is smooth and successful. It is our delight to nurture and educate the children in our care.

Below are our Stage Coordinators who look after the four stages that make up our Primary school (Kindergarten, Year 1 & 2, Year 3 & 4, Year 5 & 6). Stage Coordinators look after the students and families within their grades and provide excellent support to our staff team and parents regarding student behaviour and classroom learning.

Early Stage 1 Coordinator (Kindergarten) - Mrs Shirley Lie

Stage One Coordinator (Year 1 - 2) - Miss Lara Dikha

Stage Two Coordinator (Year 3 - 4) - Mrs Kellie Mitton

Stage Three Coordinator (Year 5 - 6) - Mr Danny Somanader

Gymnastics

What an adventure this has been for our students. They are now in the second week of Gymnastics and they are having a great time learning new skills, refining old skills and having fun in the process. We are very grateful that our students have this amazing opportunity to be trained by the Sydney Gymnastics and Aquatic Centre Team. We have been also receiving many comments from the instructors and public passersby about how polite and respectful the students have been. Those words are lovely to hear and we congratulate them for being good role models!

Year 6 Students

We are excited about how serious our Year 6 students are taking on the responsibility of being effective and responsible leaders of the Primary School community. They are supporting our other students during play time in recess and lunch with a positive behaviour programme called PERRKS Play. PERRKs play is organised by the Year 6 students and they bring play activities to our other students, helping them with play and providing a ‘buddy’ system during the play sessions. We are proud of them for being such excellent role models within our Primary school.

A warm congratulations also to our elected student leaders! We are delighted to announce Abigail and Samuel as our Primary Captains, and Myah and Jesu as our Primary Vice-Captains.

Please join us in congratulating and praying for them as they lead our Primary community, and support our broader College leadership, over the year ahead.

Meet the Teacher Evening

Thank you to all of our parents and carers for coming to support our staff at our Meet the Classroom Teacher evening last week. There were two sessions for parents to come and hear about what happens in the classroom. The information included what a typical day looks like, how our College uniform should be worn, what subjects are taught for the year and much more. If you missed the event, please look in the Parent Handbook for all this information and also refer to your Teacher’s Term 1 Grade Letter that was sent at the end of Week 1.

JOLT

JOLT means 'Jesus Over Lunch Time'. JOLT has started up this year and hundreds of students have been attending from Kindergarten through to Year 6. This is a wonderful time for them to play games, enjoy socialising while learning about who Jesus is. Please ask your child what they enjoyed about JOLT and enjoy the photos below.

Chapel and Assemblies

Every Monday, we invite all our families to come and join us for our weekly Chapel or Assembly. These are held in the MPC each week from 9 - 10am. There is always a class performance, singing, and awards to present. This is a great time to gather and join as a community during these special moments. Last week 2V kicked off class performances with a bang while sharing with us the importance of self control, which is one of our 12 student attributes that we aspire to.
