Primary Learning Spotlight

This week we share with you some of the exciting projects and lessons that our KL, 2D and 4M classes have been working on.

KL - Ms Lie

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” - Colossians 3:12

KL memorised this verse and then reflected as a class on how God asks us to learn, play and communicate with one another. The students discussed the meaning of each character trait and the different ways we can show kindness, compassion, humility, gentleness and patience in class and with their peers. The students shared their ideas and came up with these answers together.

As an additional activity, the class worked together in small groups to reach a common goal (e.g. creating one large shape with their bodies, or forming 2D shapes with various objects) so that they can continue to develop social skills and show patience, kindness, gentleness and humility with one another.

2D - Ms Dikha

This term, 2D have been investigating different changes that happen as they grow. They have examined different phases of their lives such as when they were a baby, toddler, child and when they will one day grow into adolescents, adults and become elderly. 2D explored the physical changes that happen to human beings over time as they go through life.

The class discussed the role of our five senses and how the sharpness of these senses may decline over time, or that some people may not have access to one of these senses from birth. The class considered how the loss of different senses would impact their experience of life and engaged in many immersive experiences where they eliminated a sense and then completed an everyday task. 2D began to empathise with how challenging it would be to lose the ability to use one of our five senses such as sight or hearing. They even tried tasting their fruit at ‘crunch and sip’ time without being able to see or smell the fruit.

This term 2D have also shared many personal stories of how we mark special milestones in our lives such as losing a first tooth, walking for the first time and celebrating birthdays. They were deeply enthralled as we were able to peek into a variety of cultures around the world and saw different ways of celebrating birthdays. 2D were excited to find that many of the cultures and traditions we studied were also represented in the experience of their own classmates as students shared their own unique family traditions for celebrating birthdays.

It has been amazing to see students light up when they make links to personal experiences and deeply encouraging to hear them draw connections to Biblical truth. Hearing students make comments like ‘We are all made different and unique, just how God wants us’ or ‘Maybe God’s got different things for us to do when we get old’ makes my heart sing.

4M Aesop’s Fables - Ms Mitton

Have you ever heard the saying, ‘Never judge a book by its cover?’ Or ‘Slow and steady wins the race?’ If you have, then you have immersed yourself in one of Aesop’s famous Fables.

In 4M, we have learnt that a Fable is a short story usually cast with animals as key characters, and its purpose is to convey a moral to the audience. Aesop was a storyteller from Ancient Greece, and it is believed that Aesop had 655 fables to educate. From Aesop, we learnt that a moral is a lifelong lesson that can be applied to almost any age, or aspect of life. Morals are different from lessons as they should be broad and timeless.

We were also reminded that the Bible has been written to guide us, and it teaches us how God wants us to live. Some texts studied included: The Lion and the Mouse, The Hare and the Tortoise, The Fox and the Crow and Belling the Cat. Our unit culminated in each student writing their own Fable play scripts with Australian animal characters and a clear moral. Our Fables were then presented to the class as shadow puppet presentations.
