Primary Learning Spotlight

Updated: Jun 3, 2022

Read more to hear about year 6 spelling and this week's primary assembly.

Our younger students complete a rigorous phonics programme and in the upper grades our students complete the SoundWaves Spelling programme each day, which has been developed by Australian teachers for use in our classrooms. The program is organised around the 43 phonemes (sounds) of Australian English and the graphemes (a letter or letter combination) used to represent them in written language.

The program incorporates four key areas of teaching:

  • Phonemic awareness: the ability to work with phonemes.

  • Synthetic phonics: phonics instruction that involves teaching phoneme–grapheme relationships.

  • Morphology: knowledge of the meaningful parts of words: prefixes, suffixes, and Greek and Latin roots.

  • Etymology: understanding of word origins and history.

Our Grade 6 students are in a great routine and work through 25 Focus Words or more a week and are transferring this great vocabulary by using it in other subject areas. The students from Grade 6W trust you enjoy their photos and a short video of what they work on each day.

Primary Assembly

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, but encouraging one another” Hebrews 10:24-25

This verse in Hebrews is a great reminder from the Bible of the importance of gathering together. At ACC Marsden Park we particularly love the opportunity of meeting together in our weekly Assemblies and Chapel Services.

These events start the week and are always filled with motivation, class performances, fun, and a weekly focus on one of our school attributes. This week, the focus was ‘Self Control’. As you can see from our photos, the students also receive certificate awards for their exceptional class work and for their generous acts of service to each other and our school. All of K-6 attend and we often have special guests visit.

Assemblies are a great opportunity to catch up on whole school and class events and our time together ends with our school Mascot, Marsden Bear, finding a new class home to enjoy for another week.
