Nut Aware Policy
Please see below our 'Nut Aware Policy' as an important reminder to please avoid bringing nut products to school, as a number of our students experience allergic reactions.
Due to food processing practices, it is impractical to completely eliminate nuts or nut products entirely from an environment where there is food that is brought from different places.
We therefore identify as a “Nut Aware” school.
This means we encourage parents, children and staff to avoid bringing foods that contain nuts (especially peanuts) to school. This is particularly important for class groups of which a nut-sensitive student is a member.
Products that contain nuts include:
Nuts
Peanut butter
Nut spreads such as Nutella
Some fruit and nut bars and muesli bars
Some biscuits and cakes
Chocolates and any other products that have nuts listed in the ingredients
Parent Responsibilities
All parents are asked to support the Nut Aware Policy by:
Being sensitive and supportive to the needs of students with a history of Anaphylaxis
Providing children with healthy food options that do not contain nuts
Avoiding providing their child food that might contain nuts if advised by the teacher that the group includes a nut-sensitive member.
Encouraging children to wash their hands before and after eating
Staff Responsibilities
All staff are asked to support the Nut Aware Policy by:
Incorporating it as part of the class health and hygiene program.
Notifying parents of the class if the group includes a nut sensitive student
Wash hands before and after eating.
Teaching children the importance of washing their hands before and after eating.
Maintain Nut Aware supervision at eating times and discourage students from sharing food.
Consider the policy when catering for camps and excursions.
Take Epi-pen, medications and medical plans for students with complex health issues on camps, excursions and swimming lessons.
Please refer to ACC medical/health guidelines to address issues such as asthma, anaphylaxis, concussion, etc.
