This week we are introducing you to Miss Janet Dawson, one of our Distance Education teachers.
Tell us a bit about yourself - your background, experience, when did you start at ACC and what is your role?
I have a heart for evangelism, so I have been on 30 mission trips over the years. I lived in Hong Kong for a little while, as a missionary. I love talking about Jesus, to whoever will listen. I want everyone to know how much Jesus loves them and how He can change their lives, just by inviting Him into their hearts.
I have been teaching for 35 years. I have seen a lot of changes. When I first started teaching, there were no computers or mobile phones! Phones were still attached to the wall! I taught in a range of schools all around Sydney. A year ago I started working at ACC and my life changed forever. I worked with both Distance Education and On Campus to begin with but now work exclusively with DE, looking after Yrs 2 and 5. I love the Distance Education space. No two days are ever the same.
What do you love about your job?
I love so many things about my job. The staff are so loving, kind and full of joy. We are all on the same page. Jesus and His love are central to everything we do here at ACC.
Teaching here isn't only about academic results, it is about the whole child thriving. When a child knows that they are loved, the learning will flow. I get to be a part of that! It is an honour and a privilege.
One of my main roles in DE is connecting with 'remote' students in meaningful ways. We get to meet up with some of them in person each term. For the others, we have daily contact online.
What do you love to do when you're not at work?
When I am not at work, I spend time with my mum in Bowral, or I am involved in ministry at church. I also love spending time in worship as well as preaching. I have quite a 'green thumb,' so I tend to my indoor garden on the weekends. As I have gotten older, it is the simple things in life that I look forward to. I have had many adventures over the years, but now, one of my fave things to do is spend time with friends - you guessed it - talking about Jesus.
We can have a house full of 'things,' that will bring temporary enjoyment, but my eyes are firmly fixed on what matters most.
